Did you really mean Sin

Sin has been something that has been off the agenda. Off limits in conversation and unfashionable in preaching and evangelism. Typing the word sin into notes on my iPhone recently a caption popped up; ‘did you mean…son”. Certainly even apple thinks that we shouldn’t be speaking or writing the word.

However Sin seems to be universal, unapologetic and not going anywhere fast. In recent year we have rebranded it a misplaced love, a failure in priorities. But sin is back on the menu.. I’ve increasingly found it easy to identify three parts of sin:

Sin around: The world is full of contention

Sin against: Each of us knows what it is to be wounded by the harmful attitudes and actions of others

Sin within: If we’re honest each of us recognises thoughts we have we wish we didn’t, attitudes we hold we’d rather not, and things we do that we are powerless to stop.

Of course Jesus provides the antidote to each of these poisons:

He delivers us from the curse of sin within, he heals us of the wounds of sin against, and he is returning to judge the living and the dead to deal with the sin around.
